A Digital Imaging Technician (or DIT) works directly with the cinematographer. They manage a production's workflow and are responsible for image quality control and on-set color correction. With the digital camera revolution though, the job has seen a huge shift from on-set engineering to computer workflows.

The DIT job requires a vast technological knowledge that assists with monitoring exposure levels, color correction, creating lookup tables (LUTs), reviewing 4K footage and the creation of dailies. The DIT has different duties on every set. It is involved from pre-production until post-production

Whereas a cinematographer may focus primarily on lenses, Digital Imaging Technicians would focus on their DIT carts. A DIT cart has all the essential tools for a set: computers, color balanced monitors, vectorscopes, routers, card readers, RAID drives, power strips, and more. Below is an example:

Unfortunately, the above configuration can bring and has brought some serious problems, especially when working on set.

1. The equipment is connected through many external connections and numerous plugs.
2. System instability. The whole cart is very unstable, which may risk and affect the on-site shooting progress. As a result, the cart can easily be damaged during transportation.
3. Inefficiency. After entering the shooting scene, it is necessary to re-install and debug the equipment.
